SUNDAY MORNING DEVOTIONAL
MERCY AND TRUTH ARE MET TOGETHER
Psalms 85:10, “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.”
The word “mercy” or “merciful” is found 297 times in our King James Bible.
God has declared that He is merciful. God spoke to Moses in Mount Sinai in Ex 34:6, “And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.”
The word “mercy” means, “To have pity on someone; to withhold a sentence that we do deserve.”
God has diagnosed the whole human race and His diagnosis is found in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
God gave the law that sinners might know what the penalty of the broken law righteously demands. Romans 3:19-20, “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”
The penalty of the broken law is clearly stated in Scripture: Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
God in His infinite wisdom has devised a plan whereby guilty sinners can be saved. It is declared and illustrated throughout the Scriptures. Luke 18:13 says, “And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” Jesus said that that man went down to his house justified. Jesus died to pay the penalty of the broken law that He might be merciful to all repentant sinners.
May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.
