Is it ok to get Drunk? (popular question by many Christians)

This has been a question by many people, both christian and non. Anyone i have realy asked, never could get a real answer, either based on the bible...or "what they think". So i decided to do some homework, and go through the bible and find out for myself, wether is it ok to get drunk. So i thought i'd share my findings with you all, and hopefully shed some light on this topic.

Here are scriptures i have found, and find most informative on this particular discussion. The word "Drunk" is used MANY times in the bible, and it definitely was tricky finding the right answer from the bible, on this discussion. So here is what i have found, and believe, this is the message God has left me with this question...

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
Romans 13:13

Quote :

Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1 Corinthians 6:10

From the above verses, it clearly states, being drunken, or getting drunk is wrong. I particularly like the last first, i think it spells it out in large bold writing, that getting Drunk is against God's rule. "...nor drunkards, ... shall inherit the kingdom of God", if i don't say so myself, thats the answer to the quetion right there...am i wrong?

Now i know some of you will then say, But "Drunkards" are people who are cotinueously drunk...
That is and is not true, being an alcholic is being a Drunkard, but getting drunk is also a Drunkard. God i don't believe is saying here, "Its ok to get drunk on certain occasions and for entertainment...but it is against my rule to be an alcholic." From the previous verses...God is clearly stating, being or getting Drunk is against his will.

Above it says, that you are not to hurt Gods Temple (your body), getting drunk is clearly hurting Gods temple...right?

Well hope this answers some questions, feel free to add some feedback...after all this is a discussion, and i'd like to here your opinions and views. Thats my homework God gave me for tonight...and i am blessed that He gave me my answer . GodBless!

Eph 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Gal. 5:19-21 The acts of sinful nature are obvious:.........drunkeness, etc. I warn you, as I did before that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

1Pet.4:3 states it as "what pagans do"

Jesus even mentions it in Luke.

It isn't good to get drunk, just like it isn't good to overendulge in anything (except God's grace ). But it is especially bad to overindulge in alcohol, because it surrenders your capacity to be in control of your own actions. Even though "the drink" might have "made you do it", you still made yourself get drunk, and so the fault for whatever sins you commit while drunk still falls, at least in part, on you.

But it is also important to remember that not all consumption of alcohol is wrong. For example, Saint Paul told Timothy "Do not still drink water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake, and thy frequent infirmities" (I Tim 5:23), and Christ's first public miracle involved turning water into wine at the Wedding feast at Cana. Further, didn't Christ himself serve his disciples wine at the Last Supper?

I agree with Kinjion. The Bible says don't get drunk, it does NOT say that you can't drink--you can drink, but there's a limit.

i was not saying that you shouldn't "drink", what Kinjion wrote is 100% true and i agree with him as well. Its getting Drunk/ intoxicated that is wrong. I drink of wine, beer, and other forms or alchohol isn't a sin, its exactly what kinjion said, over endulging is what makes it a sin, when you look control of your actions.

I always enjoy a nice cold beer with my saturday night hockey game .

I'm still in a sort of limbo as far as that goes... I'm legal in Ontario, where I go to school (the age is 19 here), but I'm not legal at home in Ohio until I'm 21...

haha...well then looks like me and you are heading over to europe lol...altho i don't think the hockey there is as good as here in north america. See my parents let me drink at home here in canada, cause like when i go back home to Poland, i always hang out with my buddies and we always enjoy a nice cold beer or two . So i can't legally buy beer here in Canada yet, but my parents let me enjoy it around the house ...expecially when i'm watching Hockey Night In Canada on saturday nights with my old man

I don't think drinking is a sin. Allowing the drink to take over is. But of all the people who drink, including yourselves, how many have never been drunk. I might be able to name a few who could say that. It is very hard to drink and not occasionally become intoxicated. I think it is something that the Holy Spirit will deal with differently in each person.
What to other people think when they see you walk out of a bar, or the store with a case of beer, or any other situation. In today's world people associate drinking as something that is not approved by the Christian community. So if we do drink, I think it is possible to become a stumbling block to someone else.
I did drink a little when i first became of age. One day when i stopped to grab a few drinks at the store on my way home from work, it hit me. I was leading a discipleship class at my church. I could only imagine what my high school students would think if they saw me walk out with a few beers. They probably wouldn't assume that i was only having a few with dinner and the game, but would most likely think i was getting drunk. After that, i curtailed my drinking drastically.
I don't think it is wrong to drink responsibly. I think there is a fine line in this situation when considering how it will affect a Christian's witness.

Yeah, my Pastor used to love beer, he didn't get drunk or anything, but he just liked it a lot...and realized this and he stopped drinking beer completely (this realization and stopping was a long time ago, of course). But I went to my leaders house and someone opened the fridge and I saw a few beers in there. At first I was surprised, but mainly it was because I never thought of him drinking, but then i remembered that he's 25 and is allowed to, and of course he drinks responsibly, so I was like "hey, whatev"

So maybe when people find out and are surprised, maybe it's because they just hadn't thought about that person drinking and weren't fully prepared lol

I am hoping not be judged here for what I am about to say. I'm writing it to show how easy it can be to cross the line and not realize it until it is too late.

The other night I went to a Christmas Dinner and Dance. I knew that I would probably have a couple of drinks with my co-workers and friends. I don't drink often and I don't drink a lot. I was all dressed up and feeling really good about myself. What I didn't do before I went was ask God to be with me that night so I would not be tempted. That was a big mistake. A couple of drinks turned into be a lot of drinks. I didn't even realize how much I had had to drink until it was too late. My error in judgement had already been made. I was drunk at a dance and alone (my husband was not able to come with me).

When I woke up the next day to the realization to how much alcohol I had consumed I was disappointed in myself and disappointed in the poor decisions that I had made. I let myself down by not asking God to be with me that night. I also feel that I let down some of my friends who have told me just that. I have been told by some of my friends that they thought that I was better than that, they expected better of me. I did not go out with the intention of getting drunk. I just made some very poor choices.

Well we all make mistakes and unwise choices in life, thats just how we were made. Unfortunately you made a couple unwise choices, but as long as you reach out to God, and ask for his forgiveness and learn by your mistakes, then you will be cleansed.

Thank you for not judging me Vash, but for praying for me. I have asked for forgiveness and have learnt from my mistakes. I think we all falter now and again and having His support and the support from friends makes it easier to make ammends for my wrong doings.

This is my opinion....It is wrong to get drunk....so why even put yourself in the position to be tempted to drink more than you should.....being a recoverd alcoholic and drug addict i know that it all started with just one.....So why would you put your self in the position to to be tempted?

I would say that lisa you've proved a good point, it may not be wrong to drink, but everyone needs to know their limitations. For instance an alcoholic may not be sinning by taking one drink, but he also knows that the one drink is a temptation which he shouldn't take, so for that specific person a single drink may be as bad as a sin because of what it would lead to. Not that I am calling you or anyone else here an alcoholic, I want to make that clear, I just used that as an example.
